Ubuntu 10.04 LTS release schedule

Ubuntu 10.04 LTS is in the last weeks of its release schedule. The first Beta release is scheduled for March 18. LTS is an abbreviation for “Long Term Support”. For normal Versions you get free security updates for at least 18 months on the desktop and server. With the LTS versions you get 3 years support on Ubuntu Desktop, and 5 years on Ubuntu Server. So the next release is most interesting for professional users. The LucidLynx release, scheduled for April 2010 is the next LTS version. The idea behind this version brings us some security features, too:

  • More conservative policy in the Debian package merge (auto-syncing with testing, instead of unstable)
  • Significant limitation of the number of new features.
  • Avoid structural changes as far as possible

Furthermore LTS versions are designed

  • enterprise focused (server and multiple desktop installations),
  • compatible with new hardware,
  • by focusing on hardening functionality.

So the LTS release is in some kind a security release, too. So its recommended to take a closer look at the Beta versions.
